Genre research

Our short film ‘frame’ has a romance based story.

Our ending of the film is ambiguous which is slightly unusual for a romance based genre film as the audience seek for an happy ending with a clear closure, but with out short film we left the ending ambiguous with obvious trails (with the way the main protagonist was behaving/acting) of what could happen next.

Genre was something we had to pick first and we were already leaning towards the idea of a romantic short film because we were able to expand and brainstorm on that genre the most, also we had more interesting and original ideas for this genre in particular, which is why understanding the way this type of film (genre) is constructed. The type of narrative theory it follows, for this case it would be Todorov’s narrative structure. Romantic film usually follow this narrative theory.

A romantic genre film usually consists of a male and female protagonist.

– stage 1 – At this stage everything is neutral and balanced. nothing is disrupting anything or anyone

– stage 2 – At this point the story has progressed and has led to some sort of a disruption, which the two protagonists are facing

– stage 3 – At this stage they have both figured out the problem and identified it. during this point obvious signs of the inevitable will be shown to the audiences leading them to be prepared for the worst.

– stage 4 – Around this stage is where the protagonists face/make their hardest decisions or face their hardest task to overcome in order for a happy ending.

– stage 5 – Final stage and this stage is when the protagonists preserver and are welcomed to a peaceful ending whether the couple are still together or not, however, the usual convention shows signs that most romantic films will have a happy ending with the main two protagonist from the beginning to who faced disruptions be back together again at the end.
